Breve descrizione del progetto

Postwar integration deeply transformed the legal and economic environment where European companies operated, dismantling barriers and fostering competition. Adopting an innovative cross disciplinary approach, that brings together business history, law and economic policy, this project aims to investigate how European businesses in manufacturing sectors coped with the new frame of reference created by the EEC/EU, its policies and regulatory system from the 1950s to the Treaty of Maastricht. More specifically, using original sources and literature, we’ll focus on the adaptive strategies adopted by a sample of businesses and their interactions with national/supranational authorities and policies. Through the analysis of some relevant case studies, we’ll investigate whether, and if so to what extent, the strategies adopted by businesses to cope with the new environment enabled them to go “beyond borders”, acquiring a truly “European” connotation. Exploring the “Europeanization process”, the project will combine a top-down approach focusing on how supranational rules and practices affected European businesses and a bottom-up perspective, exploring how European businesses influenced the drafting of EU legislation and the design of European policies in the competition and the industrial areas.
