| BREVE DESCRIZIONE | Starting from the 19th century, imprisonment has become the pivot of Western penal systems, thereby developing as a controversial topic of public debates at the international level. Though the Enlightenment principles of clemency and certainty of punishment were implemented, an increasing need to reform living conditions in prisons simultaneously emerged.
Scholars have poorly investigated the importance of the papal system of detention as a model. By contrast, the roman Ancien Régime combination of work and religious practice in the treatment and rehabilitation of prisoners (ora et labora), were relevant in the opinion of the observers of that time. The first objective of the project is to contribute to the international historiographical debate through a more in-depth understanding of the case-study of Rome in the context of the 18th-19th century circulation of imprisonment models. This goal will be achieved through the investigation of archives and libraries in Italy and abroad and the organization/participation to workshops/conferences. The second objective is to strengthen exchanges between academia and penitentiary institutions, as Tor Vergata University has been yet cooperating with the Rebibbia prison in Rome in the framework of the ‘Teledidattica in carcere’ E-learning project. The research aims at providing an historical and theoretical framework to tackle the crisis of today prison systems reflecting targets 4.3, 10.2, 16.3 of the UN SDGs. |
